Part 3: Home Study
A small number of those who complete the survey (about 5-10%) will be invited to participate in the Home Study portion of the SHADES study.
This is an add-on study that takes the information learned in the survey and examines it on a much deeper level. Since this will require extra time and effort, participants will earn an extra $150 for completing the Home Study.
What is involved?
The Home Study involves 2 visits to the lab, as well as (as the name implies) a 2-week study at home.
For your first visit, we will meet with you, explain this part of the study in detail, and gather basic information about your health and make sure that you still qualify. We will then give you a device to take home for 1 night, which will record your sleep to determine whether you have any sleep-related breathing disorders. You return the device in a prepaid envelope the next day. We download the data and make sure that you still qualify.
If you are not found to have a sleep-related breathing disorder, you will come back in for your second visit. This time, you will give a small blood sample. Also, you will be given a set of equipment to take home, including a watch to wear on your wrist that records movement and light (we use this to measure sleep), a device to clip to your hip that measures physical activity, a few sensors to place near your bed that will record how dark, quiet, and cool your bedroom is at night, and a tablet device (like an iPad) that you will use to fill out daily diaries to record your sleep, diet, physical activity, social interactions, and other aspects of your daily life. You will record 2 weeks worth of data and then send the equipment back to us.
We will then download everything and go through all the data. We will use this to see how this new level of information, with all this detail, will help us better understand how behavior and the physical environment play a role in sleep.
